WASHINGTON, D.C. — While the U.S. Supreme Court considers appeals to birthright citizenship, a constitutional promise enshrined in the 14th Amendment for over 150 years, the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) reaffirms our unwavering commitment to upholding this constitutional promise for all children born in the United States.

We join with all American children past and future whose birthright is now under threat, and we will continue to fight to uphold the basic constitutional principle that in America, where you were born—and not who your parents are—is what makes you an American. This bedrock protection has shaped our national character for centuries, and we will not allow it to be eroded by misguided and hateful political agendas.

Said Nicole Melaku, NPNA executive director, “The Trump Administration’s relentless attacks on our Constitution continue to be rightly scrutinized by our courts. When the fundamental nature of American identity, enshrined in the 14th Amendment, is being assaulted, our democratic institutions must intervene to stop reckless policymaking.

From day one, this administration’s policies have sown division and manufactured crises to shift focus away from its failure to address America’s real problems: the housing crisis, a broken healthcare system, and the rising cost of living. The Supreme Court’s consideration of ending birthright citizenship is the latest in a line of these attacks on the foundations of our democracy.

We believe in an America where all families can thrive without fear, where participation is not determined by their background. With the futures of our children at stake, we will fight against any effort to undermine this constitutional guarantee and the foundation of our national identity for over 150 years.”
