WASHINGTON, D.C. — This International Day of Democracy, amid national calls to register to vote and our network’s call to naturalize on Citizenship and Constitution Day, America has an opportunity to reflect on the values and preservation of our democracy. A healthy and open democracy ensures everyone can use their voice without fear of violence or retribution, where individuals are not hindered from participating in elections, and where those on the cusp of citizenship are supported rather than met with undue barriers.
Said Nicole Melaku, NPNA executive director, “A strong democracy reflects the power of the people. Throughout our history, people have come together to fight for the rights and possibilities that democracy guarantees. But now, as a faction of politicians terrorizes people based on where they were born or what religion they practice, they attack the very foundations of our democracy. It is our time to come together and hold our leaders accountable—because our rights are only secure when they are secure for all.
We have the power to shape our future by choosing welcoming communities over division, and by providing safe pathways for everyone to achieve their full potential. We must build a ‘Bigger We’—a nation where everyone can pursue their dreams and where we protect each other.”
The International Day of Democracy is founded on the core principle that democracy draws its strength from popular participation and the protection of rights. The day serves to highlight the critical importance of public engagement, which is built upon dialogue, participation, and trust.
