WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to a national tragedy last week, the Trump Administration is issuing a sweeping travel ban to carry out collective punishment against people seeking safety, stability, family reunification, and a prosperous life in the United States. The ban will not only affect newcomers, but also deeply rooted individuals and families who have been living, working, and building families in the United States for years.

According to the policy, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will suspend all immigration applications and activities from nearly twenty countries immediately, including citizenship applications and ceremonies. Many of these pending affirmative applications have been in process for more than three to five years, and their processing will now come to a screeching and chaotic halt.

This is the latest of the administration’s cruel and extreme efforts to block legal immigration pathways and attack immigrant families. Earlier this week, the administration announced its plans to pause all asylum decisions and reopen and re-review certain asylum and green card cases that were approved under the previous administration. It has been reported that the federal government is considering expanding the travel ban list to additional countries, which will only rip more families apart, cut off legal immigration pathways for entire nationalities, and leave those with pending applications in limbo.

Said Nicole Melaku, NPNA executive director, “This sweeping, discriminatory travel ban is a knee-jerk reaction unbefitting the President of the United States. A travel ban is not a targeted security measure, it is opportunism—with President Trump taking advantage of a tragedy to spread cruelty, fear, and instability. Halting affirmative applications for thousands of people and re-opening settled cases is collective punishment—not solutions-oriented policymaking. The pathways we have in place for lawful entry are under siege, and without fast action, these immigration actions and policies will upend our nation’s communities and economies. Congress must act immediately to provide oversight to assess the harmful impacts of a full USCIS work pause for entire nationalities.”

Said Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO, New York Immigration Coalition, said, “An indefinite pause is a ban, plain and simple. The Trump Administration is using the recent shooting in Washington, DC, as a pretext for a dangerous escalation of its attacks on immigrants that are rooted in racism and xenophobia. Many of the immigrants affected by these policy changes have already undergone extensive vetting, often taking years, after having arrived in America seeking security, stability, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. Their futures are now in chaos. People at every stage of the immigration process are already having their lives disrupted, including those who are just one ceremony away from becoming U.S. citizens. These actions are despicable and do nothing more than push our immigrant neighbors into the margins. We urge members of Congress to condemn the Trump Administration’s actions and call on the Trump Administration to reverse course.”

Lisa Sherman Luna, Executive Director of Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition said: “America is stronger when we welcome immigrants and refugees to the US who make our communities stronger and more vibrant. But President Trump is once again demonizing people based on the color of their skin or country of origin by restricting legal pathways to immigration and citizenship, yet another way to create more cruelty and chaos for those who don’t fit into their racist mold in order to make their narrow white supremacist vision of America a reality. But we see this for what it is and will continue to condemn such discriminatory actions.

“Immigrants and refugees from around the world regardless of race or country of origin multiply American success economically, culturally, and socially. Refugees and immigrants have always helped make the United States stronger, and they will continue to do so long after this administration leaves office, so we will continue to stand on the right side of history not on the side of hatred and division.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — En respuesta a la tragedia nacional de la semana pasada, la administración Trump ha emitido una prohibición de viaje generalizada para implementar un castigo colectivo contra quienes buscan seguridad, estabilidad, reunificación familiar y una vida próspera en Estados Unidos. La prohibición no solo afectará a los recién llegados, sino también a personas y familias con raíces profundas que han vivido, trabajado y formado familias en Estados Unidos durante años.

De acuerdo con esta política, el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS) suspenderá de inmediato todas las solicitudes y actividades de inmigración de casi veinte países, incluyendo solicitudes y ceremonias de juramento, el último paso para obtener la ciudadanía.
