WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the mega-spending budget that would allocate billions of dollars to cruel immigration enforcement at the expense of healthcare cuts to working families. This passage comes on the heels of the Senate vote, which narrowly passed due to Vice President J.D. Vance’s tie-breaker, and now includes a litany of reckless provisions meant to destabilize our communities. The National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) issued the following response:
Said Nicole Melaku, NPNA executive director, “Today, the U.S. House of Representatives set the stage for the next four years by rubber-stamping a disastrous spending bill that strips vital social safety net programs to fuel a mass disappearance and deportation agenda. We are outraged that the bill prioritizes billionaire tax breaks—on the backs of working people, the elderly, the medically vulnerable, and the food insecure. The repercussions of this bill will be felt deeply across all communities—regardless of their political affiliations, rural or urban residency, or skin color—Americans will now reckon with the outcome of this piece of legislation.
“Instead, the administration continues to exploit the issue of immigration for a base that is all too gleeful to relish in cruelty and human suffering. The allocation of a $150 billion dollar blank check for border militarization and mass enforcement will unleash racial profiling, mass surveillance, family separation, disappearances, and human rights abuses while fueling corporate greed. As NPNA, we call on those who believe in justice and human rights to stand against this betrayal—and demand members of Congress, local leaders, communities of faith, and everyday Americans do everything in their power to reject this immoral assault on our values.”
