WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federal judge in New Hampshire has placed a new nationwide block on President Donald Trump’s efforts to end birthright citizenship. This decision comes just two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court opened a path for the administration to begin enforcing the order. The National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) issued the following response:
Said Nicole Melaku, NPNA executive director, “With the birthright citizenship restrictions temporarily blocked, expectant parents can be relieved that their child will not be born stateless in a patchwork of uneven application of Trump’s Executive Order nor the recent injunction by the Supreme Court which would have allowed a patchwork of policies on the matter. But threats to our livelihoods persist. Every day, the federal government, through rhetoric and xenophobic policy, is testing the limits to redefine who gets to be an American. The ethno-nationalist, dangerous anti-immigrant agenda of Stephen Miller is now fully evident for all to see, from attempting to end birthright citizenship, skirting due process to disappear people from their communities, or revoking legal status of those who have followed longstanding immigration processes—all to funnel them into Miller’s mass deportation pipeline in service of a white nationalist agenda.
NPNA stands firmly in the belief that the 14th Amendment shall stand, and at every turn, we will oppose efforts to redefine who gets to be a part of “American” identity. We applaud the courage of Members of Congress and local leaders who have stood up to defend their constituents and the nation from continued racist rhetoric and far-right extremist policy.”
