WASHINGTON – In advance of a hearing to examine backlogs and policy changes hindering citizenship applicants at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA), UnidosUS and their allies will stand with members of Congress to applaud a decision to exercise oversight and demand accountability from an agency mired in leadership disruptions, mismanagement, and controversy.
The outcry against the “Second Wall” at USCIS has been building for more than a year out of deep concern that the current administration is aggressively pursuing a cruel enforcement agenda against children and families while they deny the estimated nine million lawful permanent residents currently eligible to naturalize full participation in public life and our democracy. Given how long the naturalization process can take, the speakers will appeal to those eligible for citizenship to “Naturalize Now.”
After the press conference, the Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee will hold its oversight hearing of USCIS–which was first announced on a press call with Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren hosted by NPNA and UnidosUS in February of this year–at 12 PM ET in 2237 Rayburn House Office Building.
