NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP FOR NEW AMERICANS PRESS STATEMENT

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted for the HEROES Act, a piece of legislation that is more inclusive of Americans than previous packages meant to respond to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The following is a statement from Diego Iñiguez-López, Policy and Campaigns Manager for the National Partnership for New Americans:

“The HEROES Act is a positive step in the direction of including all communities in relief efforts and responding to the coronavirus pandemic. We are in this together and federal legislation must reflect that. While the bill does not fully meet the nation’s needs, it includes common-sense policies like expanding testing and treatment for COVID-19, protecting medical workers and those in other essential industries, supporting states and cities, and allowing naturalization oath ceremonies to occur remotely. The bill’s passage, despite efforts to derail through motions, shows that the House of Representatives is more serious about inclusively responding to the pandemic and its economic destruction. The Senate should follow the House’s lead. Senators McConnell and Schumer must refrain from throwing immigrants under the COVID-19 bus.”
