WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) issued a statement today in response to the news of former president Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. Despite a closely contested race, Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris fell short in key battleground states, leading to Trump’s re-election. NPNA, a leading coalition of the nation’s largest immigrant and refugee rights organizations, is committed to protecting our communities and enlisting the help of allies to stand with us to protect the dignity and rights of all members of our community.
NPNA takes this opportunity to express its heartfelt appreciation for its members’ hard work, dedication, and leadership. Throughout the election, NPNA members tirelessly informed, supported, and mobilized communities, ensuring their voices were heard and their rights protected. The experiences of New American voters are unique and not shared by all, and every instance where our communities are seen, represented, and engaged in democracy, beyond Election Day, is a victory. While the outcome may not have aligned with everyone’s values or hopes, NPNA has full confidence in the strength and courage within our network to face our future challenges.
“We are deeply saddened that the majority of voters could, in good conscience, vote against decency and humanity. NPNA and its members are dedicated to advancing welcoming and inclusive policies at all levels of government, and protecting programs that uphold immigrant rights and well-being—work that extends far beyond any single election cycle,” said Nicole Melaku, Executive Director of NPNA. “We stand in solidarity with all who value humanity and inclusion and are prepared to work with our expansive membership and our allies to defend and protect our communities. We call on leaders at every level to have courage and become a champion for policies that protect the dignity and rights of New Americans—as a foundation of our democracy.”
