WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) issued the following response to the mega-budget bill, H.R. 1, that narrowly passed with a 51-50 vote, following Vice President J.D. Vance’s tie-breaking decision:
Said Nicole Melaku, NPNA executive director, “We are outraged by the multi-billion dollar blank check for Trump’s mass disappearance agenda that will unleash more harm and turmoil throughout the country and immigrant communities. This bill is a shameful betrayal of our country’s values, as healthcare for millions of people will vanish while our government gives tax breaks to the billionaire class to fund family separation.
Instead of investing in vital community needs, the Senate jammed through H.R. 1 for days on end, adding a litany of harmful provisions to fuel a partisan agenda that does nothing to improve the lives of working families.
As the House takes up the bill in the coming days, NPNA and our member network urge all Representatives to stand up for their constituents and vote down reckless spending that will cause harm to all Americans for decades to come.”
NPNA, a multi-ethnic, multiracial coalition of 88 of the nation’s largest immigrant and refugee rights organizations across over 42 states, remains committed to fighting for policies that uplift communities and ensure equitable access to healthcare and essential services for all. NPNA calls on all advocates for working families and immigrant communities to join in opposing this legislation, which prioritizes the interests of the wealthy over the needs of our most vulnerable populations.
